In this intimate conversation, Dr. Levant discusses his experiences growing up in working class Los Angeles, how traditional masculinity hampers men’s emotional development, and his unique contributions in developing effective psychotherapeutic approaches to working with men. He also reflects upon his experiences as the American Psychological Association President, including his views on the ongoing controversies surrounding the Presidential Task Force on Evidence-Based Practice. When the Therapist Leaves: A Personal Account of an Unusual Termination is a beautifully written case study by Amy Urdang, MA, portraying the real art and humanity possible in our profession. She attempts to unravel the effects of racism on her family and herself, traveling as far as Canada to interview her uncle who has expatriated for unknown reasons. This piece clearly illustrates how the person of the therapist is shaped by societal, cultural, as well as personal experiences—and how these experiences profoundly affect our work with clients.
